Jane's Message                                            July 2010

Fourth of July signals Happy Times and memories for me.  I remember the great fun and excitement of waiting and waiting for my Grandparents to come each Fourth with huge grocery sacka of fireworks.  They would bring them to the farm where my brother and I would just have a ball setting off fire crackers, playing with our cap guns and waiting interminable hours for the night time fireworks.  What a joy those times were.

 The only challenges were the weather and the livestock on the farm who could get frightened of the loud noises.  I grew up my later grade school years and high school in a tiny town in northeastern Kansas on a beautiful farm my Father inherited from his family.

The weather challenge was the worst, because if it was sunny, that meant the men had to be combining the wheat—that is depending on the year and the weather—if the wheat was ready for combining,  it had to be done.  Then if it rained the fireworks would not go off well and of course the wheat could not be harvested.

Growing up in this land of plenty—we had huge abundance of fruit and vegetables in addition to all kinds of meats and nice young fryers.  I am going to share some of my family’s favorite Fourth of July recipes this month.  We always liked spicey foods, but somehow for the Fourth—we were more traditional with Grandma Krig’s Nine Day Cole Slaw, Fabulous Buttery Potato Salad, Finger Lickin Barbecue Ribs and Butterscotch Cherry Crisp—from all those cherry trees we had. (I counted the cherry trees once when I was tired of picking and pitting and found we had 29 cherry trees.)
